I actually just decided to go here on a whim one day. I didn't know any of the kids racing, and didn't have anything invested in this event. I just knew I had the day off and wanted to do something.<br />

The event took place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, and was very fun to watch. What can be more interesting than a bunch of kids driving over-powered miniature cars right? Well, there may be a Few things, but it was definitely worth the.. $5?.. $7.. $10? I spent to get in.. Like I said, this post is way overdue, my memories gotten a little hazy with some of the specifics. But it was a great way to spend a Tuesday afternoon. They've always got events going on like this too, so check out the Speedway's website to see if there's anything going on that interests you <a href="http://www.charlottemotorspeedway.com/">http://www.charlottemotorspeedway.com/</a>.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Look at this crowd!</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Since my memories of it all are less than.. memorable. I'll let most of these pictures speak for themselves.<br />
<br />
As you can see, there's definitely some interesting cars here! The first races were with a very cool looking vehicle that I couldn't even begin to give you the name of. I'm pretty informative right? I just thought they looked cool! And there was a very nice share of wrecks as well. Who doesn't love seeing wrecks at a race?! "When nobody gets hurt of course. I wanted to make sure I added that in there so nobody gets butt hurt." You'll notice in one photo where the crane is picking up one of these vehicles, that I wasn't lying about these cars being small. I definitely wouldn't recommend that an adult try to fit themselves inside of one of these. Getting in might be possible, but I'd imagine getting out would be a little more difficult. <br />
<br />
There's definitely a nice little crowd at this place, so it's gotta be a popular event that I'd just discovered. Or maybe these kids just have big families. I did keep hearing about this being somehow related to different schools, but I couldn't elaborate any more on that for you. I will tell you that the buses you see at the end of the series were driven by school Principals, I guess in some sort of school vs school competition. Which got very brutal by the way. Buses crashing into each other, wheels coming off the ground, rubber burning, smoke exhuming, cool stuff!<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfXex1imArrYL743_OQc5U-rtZFzdtrdl1WqmF5Nc5pFE8zdibz_rHmcXzm0NKIGwj_NkgjB8xOCt3e3lxhtzsiHW9YxLqYvjy-JTeFZ1QvwQ-_B18e6970KW_Ym2pMikigEr1RnElhgc/s1600/IMG_0728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfXex1imArrYL743_OQc5U-rtZFzdtrdl1WqmF5Nc5pFE8zdibz_rHmcXzm0NKIGwj_NkgjB8xOCt3e3lxhtzsiHW9YxLqYvjy-JTeFZ1QvwQ-_B18e6970KW_Ym2pMikigEr1RnElhgc/s320/IMG_0728.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Well he's done</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Yes, I know there's a random plane in one of the photos.. Yes, I know it isn't anyway related to the event going on.. But who can resist photographing a C-130 as it flies overhead?! Okay, maybe I was just reliving some memories of my past military life there when I saw it flying by. But you've gotta admit, very cool looking plane. I'm off topic now aren't I? That happens with me sometimes. For instance, there was this one time at band camp... wait... I've never been to band camp.. but we're talking about racing, back to the topic at hand. Well, to be honest, I think I've remembered most of what I can about this event. I definitely recommend that you check it out next year when they do it again "if they don't have one sooner", or even checking out any of the other events that they have at the Motor Speedway. It's always a cool place to hang out! Even if the food and drinks are Way overpriced...<br />
<br />
If you've been to any events here and want to share your experience, of if there's anything cool coming up that you'd like to let us know about, post it in the comments below!<br />

First of all, I'd like to thank everybody for the emails I received. I'm glad you were able to get something out of this blog. <i><b>A little history lesson for you all: </b></i>This house was built long ago by a Scottish preacher named William McGregor. William soon afterwards sold it to the man who the house is named after, Dr. Kron. This man was a very famous doctor back in his day. He was known for traveling days at a time to make house calls to those who were extremely sick. He was recognized as a frontier hero, and now there's a restoration of his house sitting right where it's always been, up at Morrow Mountain.</div>

I decided to take a trip up to Morrow Mountain the other day with my family, and I seen the sign for the Kron House restoration as we were riding down to the lake. Now, I've passed this sign quite a few times before while I was up there taking photos and I've always been curious as to what it was, but I'd never actually taken the turn to go down the road and see it for myself. Well I figured it was a good time to do so. I wasn't disappointed either. I love old houses, and this restoration is great. I know it might not look like much in the photos, but I think it's definitely worth a look if you're ever up at Morrow Mountain. This tiny little house is actually two stories, with a bedroom upstairs.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The furniture inside may not be original, but they did a great job at making it look legitimate. From the couch and the rugs, to the pots and the half burned down candles, it was all great. So even if you're not a history buff, or not really into old houses, I think it's still great to see atleast once. I know my family enjoyed it. Sometimes seeing things from another time really puts your own life into perspective. It's amazing how much things have changed over what's really been a short amount of time. I wonder where things will be in another couple hundred years. Maybe people will be digging up artifacts of ours and doing restorations of our own homes. Kinda funny to think about huh?<br />

I'm a huge lover of storms and anything storm related. So obviously, I love lightning! From a distance of course... No self barbeque here, thank you! The other night there was a pretty big storm passing through here in Concord, and the lightning was just spectacular. So, me being a lover of both photography and lightning, I just had to combine them both! It was a great experience, and I plan on doing it again very soon. I think it's probably been the most enjoyable form of photography I've tried yet!</div>

<i><span style="font-size: large;">Want to take some lightning shots of your own?</span></i><br />
<br />
<i><span style="font-size: large;"></span></i><br />
<a name='more'></a><i><span style="font-size: large;">It's not that difficult.</span></i><br />
<b>What you'll need:</b> <br />
1) Camera - DSLR or Point and shoot that allows the ability to manually control shutter speed<br />
2) Tripod - A solid, stable tripod is best. Those $25 tripods just don't usually cut it.<br />
3) Remote shutter release or the in-camera ability to trigger the shutter release a couple seconds after the button is pressed - This insures that there won't be any camera shake from pressing the shutter release button. <br />
4) Some way to keep your gear out of the rain! I'd normally use a rain cover for my camera, but this time I just stood on the balcony of my apartment building. <br />
5) Patience - You're going to be taking a lot of exposures that aren't going to have any lightning in them at all. Just keep shooting.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>The gear I used:</b><b> </b><br />1) Canon 550d/T2i<br />2) Quantaray Tripod "Still saving for that great manfrotto"<br />3) Wired remote shutter release "Allowed me to both trigger the shutter remotely, as well as hold it down for however long I wanted the exposure to be"<br />4) Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 lens "At a focal length of 17mm to capture as much of the scene as I could"</li>
</ul>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lightning strikes</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Alright, now on to the technical details:</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started off seeing what shutter speed I would need to expose for the
street lights at an aperture of F/8 and ISO of 100. 15-17 seconds ended up
being about right. But since the lightning is just a quick exposure over
the whole frame, F/8 wasn't capturing enough light from the lightning.
So I decided to switch my aperture to F/5.6 and see what I would get.
With shutter speeds between 8-10 seconds, my exposure was good for both
the lightpoles and the lightning, so that's what I stuck with.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> <b>So a quick recap: </b></i></div>
<ol style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Aperture of F/5.6 "I wanted to make sure my foreground was somewhat in focus as well".</li>
<li>Shutter speed of 8-10 seconds "Plenty of time to capture the lightning in it's fullest, but it still gave me enough leeway that I could expose for a few more seconds if there was still a light show going on up there.</li>
<li>ISO of 100 "I could have easily gone up as far as 400 without worrying about noise, but for a situation where I was already expecting lengthy shutter speeds to capture the complete lighting strikes, I knew it wasn't necessary. </li>
</ol>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I captured about 180 images total, most of which didn't have any
lightning in them. That's one of the big </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
things when it comes to
lightning photography, you keep those exposures going over and over
again, whether there's lightning or not, just in hopes of getting some
in there. Another thing I noticed: a lot of the individual bolts of
lightning that are just slightly visible in the photograph, I never seen
with my own eyes. I'm not sure if the main strikes just took up so much of my attention that I didn't see them, or if they just weren't visible to me. Either way, I think I walked away from this with some pretty decent shots!</div>

One of my favorite places to visit nearby that a lot of people don't even know exists.. Morrow Mountain. It's only about 40 miles from Concord, in an area you'd never expect a mountain to be, but it's there! If you haven't been there, head on over to Google or whatever you use, and look it up. Or.. just keep reading ;)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><b>A little history</b></i><i><b> "</b>right from Wikipedia<b>":</b></i> Morrow Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the ancient <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwharrie_Mountains" title="Uwharrie Mountains">Uwharrie Mountains</a> of central North Carolina. At one time they rose to nearly 20,000 feet (6,100 m) above sea level,
but erosion has gradually worn them down to little more than high hills.
Although the park contains several peaks, Morrow Mountain is a high
point at 936 feet (285 m). However, the mountain still rises some 400
feet (120 m) above the surrounding lower terrain, and offers superb
views of the surrounding countryside on a clear day. In addition to <br />
<a name='more'></a>the
mountains, the park also contains the <a class="new" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yadkin-Pee_Dee_River&action=edit&redlink=1" title="Yadkin-Pee Dee River (page does not exist)">Yadkin-Pee Dee River</a>, one of central North Carolina's largest river systems. Alright, so it may not be all that tall.. But it's still technically a mountain, and there is some amazing scenery to look at up there. I visit quite often, whether it's for a photography outing or just to get away from everything and spend some time relaxing in nature. It's usually not too packed at the top of the mountain, but you will usually find people there, mostly looking to just get away for awhile. I've even seen people that come up here just to eat lunch or dinner, and then they drive away. Can't beat the view this close to home.You'll also find people that come up here and just relax all day, just because its so peaceful.</div>

Are you a hiker but don't feel like traveling all the way out west to hike the mountains? This place has 32 miles of trails. I haven't gotten the chance to hike any of them yet, but I do plan on doing so soon. You can bet that I'll have my camera too, so I'll make sure I write an update on what I think of them. I'm really looking forward to it, there's supposedly a lot of beautiful scenery along the trails that would make for a great photo-op and there's 12 different trails to choose from. Sounds like it's going to take a few days to get through them all lol, so we'll see how that goes. This place also has camping as well. You can pick a cabin, or you can pitch a tent. That's also one of the things on my to do list once the weather warms up a little. It's been too long since I've been camping, and spending a few days out here would give me plenty of time to get those pictures I want.</div>

If you enjoy fishing, or just spending time by the water, then they have
a great lake as well "Lake Tillery". There's a parking lot right next
to it, or you can find it along some of the trails. I believe in the spring time they're going to open up their boat rentals again. I'll be taking advantage of that and spending some time out on the lake. You might not get any photos from that one though. I prefer to keep my camera out of water if I can lol. So, please be careful going along the roads because they're not afraid to walk out right in-front of you like you're not even there. But if you respect their space and don't drive through there like a maniac, then it's a very enjoyable experience.I spent about half an hour on the side of the road just watching them and taking pictures. One walked right next to me, about 10 feet away. He looked at me as he walked past and then just went to the side of the road and started eating his grass dinner. It was a great experience.<br />

Do you enjoy taking pictures of sunsets? Then this place offers a great landscape for it. I plan on going back up there when there's some clouds in the sky to try to get a more dramatic sunset photo. I'll spare the talking on this subject and just show you some examples from my last outing.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Is It Good Enough?</td></tr>

As photographers, we all come to a point where we just don't think our work is good enough anymore. This isn't because our shots suck "usually", it's because we've just become so critical of our own work that we aren't pleased with the results we're seeing. This is a very crucial point for any photographer. This is the point where some just give up and put their camera down; whether it be for months, years, or even for good. But this is also when it's most important to go out and keep shooting, to keep pushing yourself to reach that next level. This is that moment when a photographer begins to define themselves and their style. It's the moment when you begin to set yourself apart from all the other people out there walking around with a camera.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Zack Arias is a role model of mine. He's an amazing photographer and an inspiration with portrait lighting. But even</div>
<a name='more'></a>he goes through this feeling that his work just isn't good enough. In-fact, he describes it as something that happens every single winter. But he takes that opportunity to try to redefine himself as a photographer and to better himself in whatever way that he can. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you ever feel this way, like you're just not good enough and you don't know what to do next, take a look at this video by Zack. It helps me when I'm feeling down about my own work, and I hope it helps you to push forward as well.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<b>Out of the whole video, I think this is one of the most important quotes to take from it.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>"Every photographer in all of history was a horrible photographer for some period of time. They learned, they grew. They had dark days, they persevered. That is the way of the artist. Just be patient, keep on going. Transformation takes time, and from what I've seen, it really is worth the wait."</i></div>David Henkinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10152461920649653391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5463929472948430445.post-9228342687027749082012-02-12T14:53:00.000-05:002012-05-07T23:53:55.583-04:00Cabarrus Pets Society<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to volunteer my photography services to Cabarrus Pets Society, a great local animal shelter. These people are huge animal lovers and I couldn't think of anyone better to trust the care of these dogs to.</div>

While I was there, they seemed to be pretty busy. As it turns out, it was actually one of their slow days. Their kennels are usually packed on Saturdays, with everybody running around like crazy. All of the dogs are kept in foster homes during the week and brought in on Saturdays for their weekly Adoption Event, where they'll hopefully be paired up with a permanent home. Sadly, a lot of the full grown dogs don't get adopted, because everybody wants a puppy instead. So if you're looking for a dog and don't mind one that's already grown, pay these guys a visit. But they've got plenty of<br />
<a name='more'></a>puppies too!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I mentioned before, the volunteers here are great people and they enjoy what they do. They were great to work with during my time there, and I look forward to working with them again in the future. If you have any free-time yourself, you should consider volunteering a little bit of it here or at another local animal shelter. They can usually use the extra help. Or consider becoming a foster home for some poor animal, it keeps them out of a cage or worse until they can be put with a loving family.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're a photographer, you should really look at seeing if you can volunteer your skill set at your own local shelter as well. In the end, it does make a difference. I'm hoping to be back their on future weekends to photograph more of the dogs and new puppies. It's pretty exciting work!</div>

I decided to take a trip to a nearby park today. I've actually been planning on making a visit out there for the past few days now. It's only about 2 miles from where I live, but I didn't find out about it until about a week ago. So, here's a little about my trip to North Cabarrus Park.</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRB4kHjG890PuaqHJ5tYWF6-6Zsm66fyk2gtF7G63arf_IqD7HDzcmcxfQw1Apz5hLMc-8JDHSNuEobUristJqJmPrhEkiDHTNAPtgpMHiEz2mYCyOjrIApZy9u5m6jWLY_w9WG8hOx6o/s1600/IMG_0307_08_12_tonemapped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRB4kHjG890PuaqHJ5tYWF6-6Zsm66fyk2gtF7G63arf_IqD7HDzcmcxfQw1Apz5hLMc-8JDHSNuEobUristJqJmPrhEkiDHTNAPtgpMHiEz2mYCyOjrIApZy9u5m6jWLY_w9WG8hOx6o/s640/IMG_0307_08_12_tonemapped.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Boardwalk</td></tr>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The plan was to get up early and get to the park to try to get some shots in the soft morning light. Well, that didn't happen. I rolled out of bed at about 7am and stuck my head outside. Just as quick as my head was out the door, I came to<br />
<a name='more'></a>the conclusion that I wouldn't be following my early morning plans. My main form of transportation is a motorcycle, and it was still covered in a light layer of ice in certain spots. I decided the pictures could wait awhile longer.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I got to the park at about 11am, right about that time where you <i><b>Don't</b></i> want to start your photography outing. That harsh mid-day light is just very unflattering on almost any subject. For my landscape shots, I only had a few options to work with. I could either underexpose my ground to bring out the sky, or get a proper exposure of the ground and blow out my sky. Neither of these are very appealing options, but a camera sensor can only cover so much. So I decided to go for option 3, HDR. I set my camera up on a tripod and bracketed my shots 2 stops apart, with a total of 3 exposures. I try not to use HDR if I don't need to, but sometimes it's just necessary. After my landscape shots were done, I decided to wait around and see what other subjects would cross my path. I was lucky enough to see quite a few people out there. Some were lounging around eating during their lunch break, some were out walking their dogs or exercising, and others were out there with their children, letting them play on the sets. There were also plenty of ducks and geese around who had no fear of people. They'd come right up to your feet looking for food. There's also a great little place to bring the family to eat called "Dogwood Shelter". It's just a bunch of tables with a roof, but it's a nice location. </div>

This park is a great place to visit for a few hours, or even for most of the day. There's about 90 acres of land out there. At first look, it doesn't seem anywhere near that big, but there's a lot of land beyond the large pond, winding paths, and large playsets for the kids. There's quite a few trails back there for you to follow if you're the nature type. It may not be as great as taking a trip up to the mountains, but it's a nice getaway spot close to the city. I definitely recommend giving this place a visit if you haven't been here before, it's right on the edge of Concord. I'll surely be going back in a few months to do a re-shoot once the park starts staying open until 8pm. I'd really like to get some great "Golden Hour" shots, as well as some sunset photos. </div>

I visited the Memory Lane Museum located in Mooresville, NC today.</div>
<div style="color: black; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: black; text-align: justify;">
Overall, it was a great visit, very friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. They even have a friendly black lab to greet you at the door lol. First thing you'll notice when you walk in is a great little giftshop, there are all kinds of different interesting things in there to look at. But on to what I was there for, the museum.</div>
<div style="color: black; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: black; text-align: justify;">
Entrance fee to the museum for adults is $10 <i>"at the time of this post"</i>, which is definitely worth it. There are a variety of older cars, go-karts, and other odds and ends in there as well. As someone who enjoys looking at old cars, I loved this place. As a photographer, I found that a lot of the exhibits are hard to take pictures of, due to just how much is actually in this musuem. I just couldn't quite get the angles I wanted a lot of times, but I'm not saying that as a bad thing. You definitely get your moneys worth in this place, there's just so much to see! Now on to what this blog is about, the photos. </div>

I chose a specific style for these shots; not quite vintage, not quite modern. A good balance in between that I felt complimented the exhibits. Memory Lane Museum has a lot of great things to look at, and I wanted to make sure that I did those old cars as much justice as I could. Just because I was limited in getting those full view car shots without background clutter, didn't mean that there weren't a whole lot of things to take photos of. My only regret is that<br />
<a name='more'></a>I couldn't spend more time there as there were other places I needed to be. My setup for most of these shots was basically just my Quantaray tripod mounted with my 450D, and depending on my situation, the 18-55mm or 50mm lens. From a photographic stand-point, the light is a little low, so if you're not using flash <i>"yes, they actually allow flash in there, unlike most museums"</i> you may not be able to get any useable shots without a tripod. Even with my 50mm F/1.8 set to a wide open aperture, I was still shooting with a shutter speed of about 1/30. But that's what we have tripods for anyway.</div>

Alright, photography talk aside for a moment. If you live anywhere near here, you should definitely give this place a visit. They're friendly, they've got a great gift shop, and their museum is worth spending a couple of hours in. Don't let the size of the building fool you, this place is packed full of old cars, bikes, and other assorted things that are fun to look at. Head on over to their website to get a little more information about them. <a href="http://www.memorylaneautomuseum.com/" style="background-color: white; color: #073763;">www.memorylaneautomuseum.com/</a><br />
